Living in Oakland, NJ
One of the things that makes Oakland unique is the variety of neighborhoods and homes throughout town. You will find ranches, Cape Cods, split-levels, bi-levels, colonials and larger custom homes. Some neighborhoods have smaller traditional lots, while others feature larger properties, wooded settings, cul-de-sacs and mountain or sunset views.
Areas such as Dogwood, Manito and Heights each have their own character. Depending on where you live, you can be close to schools, recreation fields, local businesses or some of Oakland’s more wooded and private areas.
Oakland’s location at the edge of the Ramapo Mountains also provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. At the same time, Routes 202, 208 and 287 make it convenient to travel throughout North Jersey.
Oakland Schools
Oakland has its own PreK through 8 public school district, which includes Dogwood Hill Elementary School, Heights Elementary School, Manito Elementary School and Valley Middle School.
For high school, Oakland is part of the Franklin Lakes, Oakland and Wyckoff (F.L.O.W) regional school district. Students can choose to attend either Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School in Oakland or Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes.
Parks and Recreation
Oakland has an active recreation program along with parks, athletic fields and community facilities used throughout the year. Its location also puts residents close to hiking trails, preserved land and many of the outdoor recreational opportunities found throughout the Ramapo Mountains.
The wooded surroundings and access to open space are a big part of Oakland’s character, especially compared with the more densely developed sections of Bergen County.
Location
Oakland is located in western Bergen County near Franklin Lakes, Wyckoff, Mahwah, Ringwood, Wayne and Pompton Lakes. Routes 287, 208 and 202 provide convenient access to other parts of Bergen, Passaic and Morris counties.
Even with its location in North Jersey, much of Oakland has a quieter residential feel. Mature trees, wooded hills and the Ramapo River help give the town a character of its own.
